Machining of Two Crusher Shafts

As part of a refurbishment operation, two 900 mm-long transmission shafts underwent precision machining, with a clear objective: to correct out-of-roundness and improve surface finish in order to meet regulatory compliance requirements.

The operation began with controlled grinding of the shaft surfaces, originally at a diameter of Ø419 mm, to achieve a final diameter of Ø416 mm. This process ensured a compliant surface, ready for subsequent babbitt (white metal) lining in accordance with the manufacturer’s specified tolerances.

Following the machining operations, a comprehensive dimensional inspection was carried out using a laser tracker, enabling precise verification of geometries and the adjustment of rings on one of the shafts. A detailed inspection report was prepared to provide the necessary data for the continuation of the babbitt fitting process.

This service highlights the importance of a rigorous sequence of machining and metrology operations, ensuring the functional quality of critical mechanical components before their return to service.
